José Luis Garci

On the 40th anniversary of José Luis Garci’s Oscar for ‘Volver a empezar’, the first one awarded to a Spanish work as Best Foreign Language Film, the Filmoteca Española pays tribute to the Spanish director. Over the next few months, the programme will offer a journey through the filmography of the Spanish director who has been nominated most times for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Award in Hollywood. The cycle, entitled ‘Spare Lives’, brings together all of his film work as a director, as well as a selection of his work as a screenwriter, producer and even performer.

The cycle of the Filmoteca Española, an organism of the Ministry of Culture and Sport in charge of preserving the Spanish cinematographic heritage, is carried out in coordination with the City Council of Madrid, through the Centro de Cultura Contemporánea Condeduque, organiser of the exhibition ‘Garcine. 40 years since the first Oscar for a Spanish-language film’, which will be held from 29 June to 15 October at the Condeduque Centre in Madrid.

To inaugurate this cycle, José Luis Garci himself will be at the Cine Doré, the screening room of the Filmoteca Española, on 1 June to present ‘Volver a empezar’ and hold a discussion with the Director of Programming, Carlos Reviriego, and the public. Several of his most regular collaborators will also be present, such as José Sacristán on the 2nd of June for the ‘Solos en la madrugada’ session, as well as Miguel Ángel Muñoz and Carlos Santos on the 21st and 22nd to talk about their characters in the ‘El crack’ trilogy.

José Luis Garci has become an icon of cinephilia not only for his work, full of love for the seventh art, but also for his work as a populariser and film critic at the head of publications such as ‘Nickelodeon’ and television programmes such as the legendary ‘¡Qué grande es el cine’. The tribute at the Filmoteca Española includes a carte blanche of titles chosen by Garci himself for the Cine Doré.
