Apply for canteen subsidies

\For primary and secondary education from 23 to 30 June 2023.

\ For the first time, these grants cover 100% of the cost of the menu.

\ From 2015 to 2023, they have increased from 800,000 euros to 8 million euros.

The Regional Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, through the Directorate General for Early Childhood, Innovation and the Educational Community, has just opened the call for applications for individualised school meal subsidies for pupils attending non-university schools during the 2023/2024 school year.

Applications must be submitted from 2 to 30 June 2023, duly completed, at the educational centres where they study during the 2023-2024 school year or through the CAIB’s electronic headquarters using a digital certificate.

The timetable is as follows:

  • First cycle infant education centres: from 2 to 15 June 2023.

-Second cycle infant education centres: from 22 to 28 June 2023.

-Primary or secondary schools: from 23 to 30 June 2023.

Schools must publish the provisional list on their notice board. After the period for allegations (ten calendar days) and once they have been resolved, if any, the list will be final. This means that students entitled to a grant can have it confirmed by the start of the academic year.

The Call for applications also foresees a specific period for late entrants, which will be open from 25 April to 3 May 2024. The provisional list for newly arrived students will be published in the centres before 30 May 2024.

The aim of the canteen subsidies is to grant aid to students who, due to their family’s economic situation, unfavourable socio-family circumstances or due to circumstances of travel to the school, find it more challenging to pay for this service.

This aid is aimed at pupils in public and state-subsidised schools, as well as in early childhood education centres that are users of the canteen service.

It is worth mentioning that for the first time, these grants cover 100% of the cost of the menu.

You can find all the information to formalise this process on the website of the Directorate General for Early Childhood, Innovation and the Educational Community of the Regional Ministry.

The highest amount ever allocated to canteen subsidies

The 2023/24 school year has a budget of 8 million euros.

This allocation is intended to cover all applications for canteen subsidies that may be submitted for the next academic year 2023/24.

The 2022-2023 school year has had 10,904 students benefiting from canteen subsidies. This is 682 more pupils than last year. Of this total, 4,649 students are from subsidised schools and 6,255 from public schools. The aid reaches public and subsidised centres and 0-3 centres.

There are currently 187 public schools in the Balearic Islands with a canteen service, of which 149 are in Mallorca, 23 in Menorca, 14 in Ibiza and 1 in Formentera. In the first quarter of the academic year, 6 new canteens are scheduled to open, 4 in Mallorca and 2 in Formentera.

Requirements and aid

The beneficiaries of the canteen subsidies may be families who, during the 2023-2024 school year, have children attending a non-university public school or a subsidised private school, in the second cycle of nursery education, primary education or secondary education, as well as families who, during the 2023-2024 school year, have children attending a first cycle nursery school.

The children must be users of the canteen service or have a place reserved for the canteen service for the 2023-2024 school year.

If the requirements are met, two types of beneficiaries are distinguished:

1.Direct beneficiaries:

a) Pupils who are in foster care.

b) Family victims of gender violence.

c) Pupils who have refugee status (themselves or their parents or guardians).

2.Beneficiaries by scale :

a) Pupils with unfavourable economic or socio-familial conditions.

b) Pupils who during the academic year 2023-2024 make use of the school transport service in schools which follow a split school day because they do not have another school closer to their place of residence and pupils attending schools outside their municipality because the studies they are studying are not taught in their municipality.

The amount of the aid has been calculated on the basis of the average price of the annual cost of the canteens managed by the Regional Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, and it must be borne in mind that in no case may the amount of the aid be higher than the cost of the canteen service:

a) Direct beneficiaries:

  • 70% of the average cost of the canteen (770 euros).

b) For socio-economic reasons:

  • 30 or more points: 100% of the average cost of the canteen (1.100 euros)
  • 20 to 29 points: 80% of the average cost of the canteen (880 euros)
  • From 15 to 19 points: 70% of the average cost of the canteen (550 euros)
  • From 10 to 14 points: 50% of the average cost of the canteen (770 euros)
  • From 5 to 9 points: 25% of the average cost of the canteen (275 euros)

c) For reasons of travel:

  • 10 to 18 points: 50% of the average cost of the canteen (‘550)
  • From 5 to 10 points: 25% of the average cost of the canteen (275 euros)
