Sound Archive of Menorca

Taking advantage of the celebration of International Archives Day, on Friday 9th June, the Image and Sound Archive of Menorca premieres its new self-produced documentary “ENGINEER, CAMERA AND ACTION!

Continuing with its work to raise awareness of Menorca’s photographic and audiovisual heritage, the Image and Sound Archive of Menorca-CIM has commissioned Magda Timoner Pelegrí to make a documentary showing the beginnings of amateur filmmaking on our island by the people and entities that promoted and made it in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

In order to make the documentary, up to 11 people have been interviewed who in some way played a leading role in the first steps of cinema in Menorca. Based on their point of view and experiences, and complemented with photographs and films preserved in the archive, a review is made of the first film club and alternative cinema initiatives in late Francoist Menorca, and of the first films made in the Aluloid sky in this context.

The aim of this documentary is to show what was being done and how it was being done, in a grey moment but one of creative explosion, which gave rise to a rich and varied amateur film production.

“ENGINEER, CAMERA AND ACTION! Precursors of amateur filmmaking in Menorca”. 9th June at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of Can Victori in Maó (Camí des Castell 28).
