The exhibition includes documentation on cooperatives, workers’, cultural and secular societies, as well as trade unions and mutual aid.

The origins of the Civil Governments can be found in the Cadiz Constitution of 1812, which stipulated that the political government of the provinces would reside in a superior chief or political chief appointed by the king. The post was abolished by Ferdinand VII in 1814 and re-established with the Liberal Triennium of 1820 to 1823.

The provincial laws of 1870 and 1882 established its functions and powers. With Law 6/1997 of 14 April 1997 on the organisation and functioning of the General State Administration, the Civil Governments disappeared.

The documentary collection of the Civil Government of the Balearic Islands was transferred to the Archive of the Kingdom of Mallorca from the Government Delegation of the Balearic Islands. Almost 2000 files of associations from 1880 to 1992 are preserved.

The documentary series Associations is part of the General Secretariat, in the section of Public Order and Citizen Rights.

The Civil Government documentation kept in the archive corresponds mainly to the second half of the 20th century. Almost nothing is preserved from the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, although it is in the series of associations where the oldest documentation of the institution can be found.

The celebration of International Archives Day is an opportunity for these centres to present to society the activities they carry out in the name of the conservation and dissemination of the documentary collections they hold.

In the case of the Archive of the Kingdom of Mallorca, the celebration coincides with the development of the work of description and digitisation of documents related to democratic memory, thanks to funding from the European Recovery and Resilience Funds.
