Menorca Starlight Night Photography Contest is here

During the first edition of the contest, more than 100 photographs of Menorca’s night sky were submitted in order to promote its beauty and the exceptional conditions on the island for astronomical observation.

The Menorca Biosphere Reserve Agency, in collaboration with the Ciutadella Artistic Circle Photoclub, has announced the 2nd Menorca Starlight 2023 Night Photography Competition, the second edition of the photography contest to promote the quality of the night sky in Menorca, and the island as a Starlight destination.

Organised for the first time in 2021, this biannual photography competition is part of the initiatives that the Menorca Biosphere Reserve Agency of the Island Council is promoting to promote the night sky of Menorca following the declaration of the island as a Starlight reserve and tourist destination in 2019, and the approval of the Regulations for the Protection of the Night Environment of Menorca in 2021. An initiative that also allows the protection, safeguarding and conservation of the darkness of the night and the starry sky of the island, a natural heritage protected from light pollution vital for the biodiversity of the biosphere reserve.

2023 edition

The call for entries for this second edition opened on 22 June and photographs may be submitted until 31 October. As in the previous edition, the contest has been conceived to value the art of photography as a way of reflection and expression of the particular vision of any photographer, whether professional or amateur, towards the night sky of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve.

The competition maintains the 5 categories of participants of the first edition, and opens the possibility of including images of photo demonstrations and success stories within the category of “People and the sky”. The categories are 1. Landscapes, land and sea; 2. Towns and starry skies; 3.

Each participant may submit up to a maximum of 5 photographs of their own authorship, in colour or black and white, taken within the territorial scope of the biosphere reserve of Menorca (including its terrestrial and marine delimitation). This definition of the night sky includes images taken at twilight, always included in the interval after sunset and before sunrise.

The competition will award 3 photographs per category, 1st prize, 2nd prize and Honourable Mention. The first prize in each category will be endowed with a voucher worth 300 euros, to choose between products or services of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve brand, and the second prize in each category with a voucher worth 150 euros in products or services of the brand. A specific honourable mention is reserved, as a minimum, for participants under the age of 18.

In addition, the winning and runner-up photographs will be published and exhibited in a travelling exhibition that will tour all the municipalities of the island.

The organisation of the first edition of the contest in 2021 counted on more than 100 images of the night sky of Menorca to spread its beauty and the exceptional conditions that exist on the island for astronomical observation.
