The service makes it possible to dispense with the physical cryptographic card and digitally sign documents from any device connected to the internet, without the need to be in the office.

The Ministry of Justice offers the possibility of obtaining a new Digital Identity in the Cloud. This electronic certificate of centralised signature allows secure access to its digital services and the making of electronic signatures, without the need to use a certificate hosted on a physical card.

This service has become effective within the framework of the collaboration agreements between the Ministry of Justice and the Spanish Mint (FNMT). Thus, the generation and storage of this certificate will reside in a specialised technological infrastructure managed by the FNMT.

Although the new Digital Identity in the Cloud will continue to be developed for use in different digital services, it has initially been selected for use in the Justice Administration’s Portafirmas service.

Advantages of the certificate
Among the advantages provided by this service are that it will no longer be necessary to have a physical card or the necessary device to read it; and it will allow documents to be digitally signed from any device connected to the internet, without the need to be physically present in the office.

In addition, this service speeds up the signature process, while eliminating the repeated request for credentials that is typical of the physical cryptographic card identity.

The Portafirmas service of the Justice Administration is implemented throughout the territory managed technologically by the Ministry of Justice, used both by judicial bodies and by public prosecutors’ offices, Institutes of Forensic Medicine and Territorial Management.

Its use is extended to these same bodies in the Autonomous Regions of Asturias and La Rioja. In the rest of the Autonomous Regions with devolved powers in Justice, Portafirmas are also used in some information systems in the area of public prosecutor’s offices.

This service was launched in a pilot project in Cuenca at the end of 2022, and last April the use of the Portafirmas of the Administration of Justice was enabled.
