The Balearic Islands Health Research Institute (IdISBa) has submitted a formal application for reaccreditation to the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), the national body responsible for certifying the quality of health research institutes in Spain. The IdISBa is thus seeking to renew its commitment to research of excellence, of a markedly translational nature and with which it seeks answers to the health problems of the public.

IdISBa was accredited for the first time in 2019. The accreditation process is carried out according to the criteria established in Royal Decree 279/2016, of 24 June, on the accreditation of biomedical or health research institutes. This decree involves adopting a system of organisation and management that ensures the proper use of public and private resources, as well as correct research practice and the transfer of results to clinical practice.

Re-accreditation will mean continuing to access different research programmes to obtain funds to develop new projects and to guarantee the maintenance and improvement of current technical and human resources.

From this moment on, the ISCIII will analyse the documentation sent by the IdISBa. Subsequently, the ISCIII will evaluate IdISBa in situ by means of an audit team that will draw up a report for the Evaluation Commission, which, within a maximum period of six months from the start of the procedure, will have to resolve the application.

The health research institutes are multidisciplinary research centres and are made up of different institutions that contribute to the scientific basis of the programmes and policies of the National Health System, preferably promoting translational research, with the aim that the knowledge generated from health research is ultimately applied to the treatment and prevention of diseases, and to the improvement of the health and quality of life of the population. Currently 35 institutes are accredited by the ISCIII, in 13 Autonomous Communities, with more than 24,000 researchers.
