The Ministry of Equality condemns a new gender violence murder in Girona. A 26-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her ex-partner on 27 July. The victim had no children. There were no previous complaints of gender violence against the alleged aggressor.

With the confirmation of this case, the number of women killed by gender violence in Spain rises to 30 in 2023 and to 1,214 since 2003, when data collection began.

The Minister for Equality, Irene Montero, and the Government Delegate against Gender Violence, Victoria Rosell, once again wish to express their absolute condemnation and rejection of this sexist murder and convey their full support to the victim’s family and friends. Both the minister and the delegate call for all efforts from the institutions, administrations and society as a whole to arrive in time and prevent more deaths.

The Ministry of Equality, through the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, would like to remind you that the 016 telephone number, online consultations via email at, the WhatsApp channel at 600 000 016 and the online chat, accessible from the website, continue to operate normally 24 hours a day, every day of the week. At 016 you can ask for advice on the resources available and the rights of victims of gender violence, as well as legal advice from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day of the week, with attention in 53 languages and a service adapted to possible situations of disability.

On the other hand, it also reminds us that in an emergency situation, you can call 112 or the emergency numbers of the National Police (091) and the Civil Guard (062). In the event that it is not possible to make a call and in a dangerous situation, the ALERTCOPS application can be used, from which an alert signal will be sent to the police with geolocation. These means of assistance can be activated by the victim and also by anyone who knows or suspects a case of gender violence. It is the duty of society as a whole.
