State Archives

The State Archives of the Ministry of Culture and Sport propose this summer a varied cultural offer aimed at both neighbours and tourists in five provinces, with exhibitions, guided tours, audiovisual screenings and new specialized digital content, such as the pieces of the month or reading guides.

In Salamanca, the Centro Documental de la Memoria Histórica is hosting the last days of “Mujeres, Lucha y transformación: su reflejo en los carteles del Centro Documental de la Memoria Histórica” (Women, struggle and transformation: their reflection in the posters of the Centro Documental de la Memoria Histórica) at its headquarters in Los Bandos.

Extended until July 30, this exhibition, composed of reproductions of posters, explains the roles attributed to women and their struggle for equality.

Another poster exhibition can be seen in the Archive of the Royal Chancery of Valladolid until September 30. It is “El combate del centauro. Society, gambling and subversion in the posters of Manuel Sierra”, as part of the events organized by Comisiones Obreras de Castilla y León on its 45th anniversary.

Also in Valladolid, the General Archive of Simancas offers free admission to its exhibition “La fortaleza de la memoria” about its history and collections. This proposal coincides at the end of July with a youth camp in which twenty students will carry out heritage protection activities.

In addition, the Archivo General de Indias, in Seville, will be showing the winning short films of the “European Digital Treasures” project until September.

Guided tours and in-room consultation services
In summer, the public is also offered access to the premises of some of the State Archives: the Simancas Archive offers free guided tours, the latter by prior arrangement. Similarly, the Centro Documental de la Memoria Histórica organizes visits for groups of between 20 and 25 people at its two sites. For its part, the Archivo Histórico de la Nobleza organizes a guided tour every Wednesday, until September 6, with a route that includes a careful selection of documents, while the Archivo General de Indias allows free access to its headquarters in La Lonja.

This cultural proposal is aimed at promoting greater knowledge of the State Archives and is carried out in parallel to the regular service of consultation, reading, research and reprography, with schedules adapted to the summer period.

More cultural proposals, on the web
The State Archives extend their summer cultural offerings to their web pages: the National Historical Archive, in Madrid, has published its featured piece for July and August on “Pedro de Gante and his educational and evangelizing work in America”, while the Historical Memory Documentary Center has published a final section of its Fragments of Memory section, dedicated to Pablo Ruiz Picasso on the 50th anniversary of his death.

Finally, it should be noted that the Network of Libraries of the State Archives has prepared a Reading Guide on the 125th anniversary of the Generation of ’98 to highlight its importance in the history of literature and thought in our country, as well as to give visibility to the women who were part of the movement. This guide is in addition to those published by the Archive Documentary Information Center on Las Sinsombrero, the women of the Constitution of 1978 and the Bicentenary of the Liberal Triennium (1820-1823), among other diverse topics.
