Ocho de Agosto celebrations

The Consell de Eivissa has organized the activities to commemorate the Ocho de Agosto which, framed in the program of Fiestas de la Tierra, pays tribute to the patron saint of our island, San Ciríaco. This year, as a novelty, the institutional celebration will be held again in the cloister of the old building of the Town Hall of Eivissa, given the completion of the works that in the last edition of this festival had made its use impossible.

Thus, on Tuesday the 8th, at 10 am, there will be a concert by the Eivissa City Band in the Cathedral Square, followed by the solemn mass (10.30 am) officiated by the Bishop of Eivissa and Formentera and sung by the Cor Amics de sa Música. Then, the civic-religious procession and prayer will be held in the chapel of San Ciríaco.

The procession will end at 12.15 pm in the Plaza de Espanya, behind the building of the old town hall, where President Vicent Marí and the president of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, will pay the traditional tribute to Guillem de Montgrí and then go to the Cloister of the Town Hall where from 12. 30 hours there will be a peasant dance by the Federation of Colles de Ball and Popular Culture of Eivissa, the institutional speech of the president of the Consell de Eivissa and the interpretation of “Roqueta, my rock” by the Cor Amics de la Música.

Great fireworks display

As usual, the 8th of August will culminate with a Great fireworks display promoted by the Department of Culture, Education and Heritage of the Consell Insular de Eivissa, to be held at 24.00 hours from the old wall of the Port of Eivissa. These have been awarded to Fuegos Artificiales del Mediterráneo for a total of 44,000 euros (VAT excluded). In total 400 kilos of gunpowder will be launched in a show that will last more than 12 minutes. The assembly will take place on the same day 8 from the morning, and in addition to the closure of the wall, will involve the installation of security barriers around the perimeter of the Port of Eivissa, from the old wall to the Maritime Station of Formentera.

The Fiestas de la Tierra was declared Festivities of Cultural Interest in the plenary session of June 14, 2007, establishing as its own elements the solemn Mass with the Te Deum in the Cathedral; the Procession in the chapel of San Ciríaco, leaving open the presence of the Saint Ciríaco in the Cathedral; the Tribute to Guillem de Montgrí; the participation of the Band of the City of Eivissa and the Heart of the Conservatory and/or other representative groups; the participation of the workers of all the parishes with their flags; the participation of all the peasant dance groups; the popular snack; the dances on bridges and fountains on that day and before and after and the fireworks display.
