The Councillor for Mobility, Territory and Housing of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Marta Vidal, has informed the Consell de Govern of the sending of a letter to the President of AENA, Mauricio Lucena, expressing the rejection of the Government of the Balearic Islands to the proposal to raise airport taxes by 4.09% from March 1, 2024.

The councillor considers it necessary “that an exception be made in the Balearic Islands, taking into account the dependence of residents on air transport” and regrets “that this increase in air fares could have a negative impact on passengers with an increase in ticket prices, limiting the mobility of island residents”.

In the letter, Vidal asks AENA to rethink its position regarding the aforementioned increase, assuring that “it would mean a great harm to our citizens and businesses, as well as a foreseeable negative impact on the competitiveness of the tourism sector in the Balearic Islands”.

In this regard, the councillor recalled that at the last meeting of the Balearic Islands Airport Coordination Committee held on 12 December 2022, no reference was made to a possible increase in taxes and they have not received any kind of communication on the matter, so they do not know how this increase could affect the Balearic population, companies and the tourism sector.

The councillor has also asked the DGAC, which reports to the Ministry of Transport (MITMA), to convene the Balearic Islands Airport Coordination Committee as soon as possible to discuss this matter and other issues of interest to the Autonomous Community, such as the OSP pilot project for the Maó-Barcelona route to control maximum prices in the Balearic Islands.
