Two new murders

The Ministry of Equality condemns two new murders due to gender violence in the provinces of Cordoba and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The first case involves a 31-year-old woman allegedly murdered by her partner on August 8 in the province of Cordoba. The victim had three minor daughters and there were previous reports of gender violence against the alleged aggressor.

The second case involves a 91-year-old woman who was allegedly murdered by her spouse on August 8 in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The victim had no children and there were no previous reports of gender violence against the alleged aggressor.

With the confirmations of these cases, the number of women killed by gender violence in Spain rises to 35 in 2023 and to 1,219 since 2003, when data collection began. Likewise, the number of minors orphaned by gender violence in Spain amounts to 39 in 2023 and 416 since 2013.

The Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, and the Government Delegate against Gender Violence, Victoria Rosell, want to express once again their absolute condemnation and rejection of these sexist murders and convey all their support to the families and friends of the victims. Both the minister and the delegate ask for all efforts from the institutions, administrations and society as a whole to arrive in time and prevent more deaths.

The Ministry of Equality, through the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, wants to remind that the 016 telephone number, the online consultations through the email 016-online@igualdad.gob.es, the WhatsApp channel at the number 600 000 016 and the online chat, accessible from the website violenciagenero.igualdad.gob.es, continue to operate normally 24 hours a day, every day of the week. At 016 you can ask for advice on available resources and the rights of victims of gender violence, as well as legal advice from 8 am to 10 pm every day of the week, with attention in 53 languages and a service adapted to possible situations of disability.

On the other hand, it also reminds that in an emergency situation you can call 112 or the emergency numbers of the National Police (091) and the Civil Guard (062). In case it is not possible to make a call and in a dangerous situation, the ALERTCOPS application can be used, from which an alert signal will be sent to the police with geolocation. These means of assistance can be activated by the victim and also by anyone who knows or suspects a case of gender violence. It is a duty of the whole society.
