Christmas exhibitions at La Misericòrdia

The Consell de Mallorca is preparing a new proposal for the exhibition halls and the Misericòrdia’s cistern to be inaugurated on December 8. This Wednesday, November 15, is the last day to visit the current exhibition M3/ Encounters to Phase V, which has been extended due to its success of visits: more than 30,000 people have visited it in less than two months. From Thursday, the current exhibition will be dismantled, the next one will be prepared and these 20 days will be used for maintenance and cleaning of the cistern.

The new proposal prepared by the Consell de Mallorca, in collaboration with the Associació de Betlemistes de Mallorca, will have a large 35 square meters popular nativity scene in Mallorcan style. It consists of 250 handmade figures: handmade, made of clay, and painted one by one. In addition to the birth, the annunciation and the kings, there will be everyday scenes of the streets of the city and the countryside, with the corresponding fixtures and fittings.

There will also be an exhibition of eleven dioramas with Christmas scenes, all of them also handmade: from nativity scenes to customs scenes of Christmas traditions in places of Mallorca, such as Cala Deiá, the cloister of Montision de Porreres or unique buildings of Palma as Can Oms. Finally, there will be a third exhibition of neules.

These three exhibitions in the exhibition halls will be accompanied by two audiovisual projections of the Wilma Group that keeps the Arxiu del So i de la Imatge del Consell de Mallorca. First, there will be a short documentary of the 1979 handmade manufacture of the figures and the assembly of a Mallorcan nativity scene by Ramon Ripoll Vanrell “Pulga”, who collects from nature the elements with which he will make the crib: mud from the earth and vegetation from the forest. Then, visitors can also enjoy a second short film from 1984 that shows the homemade elaboration of the almond nougat coca: it follows the whole process of nougat production from the almond tree to its consumption at the Christmas table.

Therefore, it should be noted that from November 16 to December 7, the exhibition halls and the cistern of La Misericòrdia will be closed to the public for dismantling, maintenance and assembly of the new proposal. From December 8, the exhibition area located in the Pati de les Rentadores de la Misericòrdia will reopen to the public from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm and from 5 to 8 pm.
