More than a hundred firefighters and other members of emergency services from all over Spain participate in the II Congress of the Spanish Association of Mountain Rescue Groups, organized by the Bombers de Mallorca, which is being held from yesterday until tomorrow Friday in Palma and Sóller.

This is a training activity aimed at strengthening the knowledge and skills of firefighters and emergency services in mountain interventions. These initiatives allow to improve the response capacity of the emergency corps in mountain rescues, actions that involve multiple peculiarities and require a series of knowledge, techniques and specific materials.

The Congress was attended by the main national fire departments that perform mountain rescues, from Alicante, Asturias, Cantabria, Catalonia, Castellón, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra, Valencia and Vielha, as well as firefighters and emergency services from the three islands.

The opening speech was given by the brothers Eneko and Iker Pou, recognized climbing professionals, and was divided into two parts: on the one hand, “Aupa Pou: a roped life” and, on the other hand, “Experiences in rescue”. This was followed by a round table discussion in which four health professionals, with extensive experience in rescue, addressed the issue of sanitization of mountain rescue from different points of view.

The day ended with a workshop on “Demonstration of monitoring and defibrillation in the natural environment”, by the director of the Chair of Natural Environment Medicine of the University of Girona, Iñigo Soteras.

Today, the morning will be dedicated to sports activities in the natural environment and attendees can choose between canyoning, climbing or hiking. In the afternoon, the Grup de Rescat de Muntanya de los Bombers de Mallorca will carry out an exhibition and practical demonstration of rescue equipment. To end the day there will be workshops related to mountain rescue.

The last day of the Congress, Friday, will host four presentations (“Rescue simulator of the Vall d’Aran”, “Return of experiences: accident is Cornador, Tramuntana”, “Press communication in rescues and social networks” and “Creation of the Technical Rescue Group (GRT), Firefighters of Navarra)”. In the morning there will be a round table with four professionals of recognized experience who will address the issue of mountain rescues with helicopters.

The Spanish Association of Mountain Rescue Groups was founded in January 2022 with the participation of the Grup de Rescat de Muntanya de los Bombers de Mallorca. Its objective is to bring together all the fire departments and emergency services that perform these specific types of rescues, to work together, share experiences and be a point of cohesion between the different groups and specialists.
