I Diabetes Day of the Menorca Health Area

The aim of this day was to offer the necessary knowledge so that people with diabetes have the maximum information and know the habits they have to integrate into their daily lives to improve their quality of life, as well as to prevent and reduce the risks associated with this chronic disease, which is characterized by increased levels of glucose in the blood and affects 425 million adults worldwide. Diabetes mellitus is currently the most frequent pathology in developing countries; in the Balearic Islands, it affects 6% of the population.

The opening ceremony was led by the Managing Director of the Health Area, Bernardo Pax, and the co-leader of the BPSO Guide, Margarita Mesquida. It was attended by the Director of Nursing, Bàrbara Duque, and the Medical Director of Primary Care, Margarita Rodríguez-Loeches.

The first block of presentations of the day began with a talk by the nutritionist Cati Bosch on the importance of following a healthy diet adjusted to the needs of each age and situation, while she made known the resources that patients have available through the web portal Eina Salut, of the Conselleria de Salud. The podiatrist Àlex Florit, for his part, has talked about the different pressure relief methods on the neuropathic diabetic foot, which consists of the loss or decrease of sensitivity and, therefore, means an alteration of the natural defence mechanism to prevent injuries or ulcers.

Surgeon Hernán Giordano also participated in the block of lectures to discuss circulation and the diabetic foot, a worldwide complication affecting between 8 and 13% of patients with diabetes mellitus, mainly between 45 and 65 years of age.
